When we think of “doing ministry” we envision a brave missionary leaving home and living among a tribal group overseas to share the Gospel.
While this is noble, many moms become discouraged that “all” they’re doing is caring for their home and raising children.
The truth is – one of the most beautiful callings of a woman is to be a mother – and raising the next generation to love the Lord our God is the most important ministry a woman can have.
As C.S. Lewis beautifully said: “Children are not a distraction from more important work. They are the most important work.”
But society tricks women into thinking they are “less than” if they choose to stay home and raise their family.
The feminist movement has told women they need to go out and climb the corporate ladder to make a name for themselves, to be successful – that having a career is the marker of success in life.
In Christian circles it can almost be worse…
… with women believing they need to host a Christian podcast, write a book, go on mission trips every year in order to be “relevant” enough to serve God.
But ladies – this is a LIE straight from the gates of hell!
Again, there is nothing wrong with any of the above ministries.
But please remember, it isn’t grand works that make us “holy.”
Often, it’s the day-to-day mundane tasks of quietly serving the Lord by obeying Him and caring for your family that can have the biggest eternal impact.
Sadly, so many people neglect their own homes to do ministry “elsewhere” while their families are in shambles.
This is not God’s design.
If you are a new wife or mom – or even a seasoned mom – and feel discouraged that you aren’t able to be out “there” serving the Lord, take heart.
God blessed you with the gift of a life to shepherd and train up your child in righteousness.
Teaching a child the ways of the Lord at a young age will set them up to know and fear God all the days of their life.
As the Bible says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
Sure, the days may be long and tiring.
As you wipe your child’s dirty hands, prepare meals, and sweep the crumbs off your floors for the hundredth time that day – you may feel like all of it is meaningless.
Oh, but sweet sister, it isn’t!
Each time you serve your family by providing a warm and peaceful home for them to find respite – not only are you serving them, but you are serving the Lord.
And think about it – there is no greater influence in a child’s life than their own parents.
By taking time to read Bible stories with them and teach them the ways of Jesus, you are arming them with the power of the Gospel.
So fellow homemaker, know that as you serve your family well – your ministry is having an eternal impact.
May God bless your home.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
