Dwight and Ashley started off their marriage like most couples – full of crippling student loan and credit card debt.
And when Ashley became pregnant with twins, losing one baby in utero and birthing a son with severe medical complications, their debt only continued to pile up. Yet, this faithful couple still tithed.
Knowing God was their ultimate provider – and even though their actions went against the advice of the world – this couple trusted God. And He answered their prayers in the most incredible way.
But the road wasn’t easy and things continued to get worse for this couple.
Dwight lost his job and their medically fragile son, Levi, needed expensive bone marrow transplants.
But instead of cursing God, this couple continued to give generously from the limited funds that they had and got down on their knees to ask God for help.
“Money in God’s Kingdom is the opposite of what we think it should be,” said Dwight, “So you tithe first, even though it doesn’t make sense, even though you can’t make ends meet and God will let you make your ends meet. God says, ‘Test me in this. Do it. Try it and see what happens.’”
Ashley said, “I turned around and looked at Dwight, I said, ‘Dwight, I have no idea how we are going to pay this off.’ And I just laid my hands on the–on the stack and I said, ‘God, I don’t know how it’s going to happen, but You do. You are our Provider and we trust in You.”
And then a miracle happened.
Money just seemed to show up for the couple right when they needed it most.
They’d receive a check from one person and a donation from another.
And thanks to the generosity of their church community, they were able to pay for Levi’s treatment!
“Ashley said, “We walked in our church, somebody would hand us cash, someone would hand us a check, someone would hand us a bag of coins and dollars that they’ve collected for our family. Like I’d bawl just, and I’m like ‘God, how could You prompt so many people to provide our every need?’”
And the blessings continued to pour down from heaven.
Dwight started a new job and was making even more than his previous salary – and he was able to pay off the entire $250k of debt they owed!
What an amazing testimony that this couple chose to trust God to provide, even though they didn’t know how He would.
Often times Christians think Biblical giving is optional or reserved only for seasons of abundance.
But Scripture calls us to be cheerful givers and give to our local church and other ministries.
And as Christians, we don’t give with the hope that it will lead to “financial blessings” – we give knowing that God promises to always provide for His people.
Let’s pray for this family, that little Levi will continue to grow strong and respond to treatment.
And may we all live by their example to walk by faith, not by sight.
