80-year-old Hody Childress was a farmer who loved his community and lived a quiet life – until he passed away and his community learned a shocking secret.
While Hody never boasted or bragged about his life, at his funeral town residents discovered for more than 10 years Hody faithfully helped those in need without any public recognition.
And once you hear the touching story of Hody’s generosity – you’re bound to be moved.
There were about 900 residents in Hody’s small town – and he lived in a warm and friendly community where everyone knew each other.
Having suffered tremendous loss himself with both his son and wife passing away, Hody was determined to help those around him who were in need.
So one day he decided to hand Brooke, the owner of Geraldine Drugs, a $100 bill and told her to put it into a fund for anyone who couldn’t afford their prescription drugs.
While that incredible act of kindness alone was enough – Hody faithfully continued the same habit, every month, for 10 years!
Each month he would hand Brooke a $100 bill and tell her again to keep the donation a secret, and use it to help those in need.
He also told her to simply tell all those who received medicine the gift was a “blessing from God”.
WVTM reported:
“It was 2012, and Hody Childress made his way to Geraldine Drugs — it was and is a meeting place for residents, warm and friendly. Hody walked back to the pharmacy and told Brooke, “Here, this $100 is for anyone who can’t afford their prescription.” “Do not tell a soul that the money came from me,” said Hody. “Tell them it’s a blessing from God.”
It was a month later, and Hody Childress again walked into Geraldine Drugs. “Here’s another 100-dollar bill,” Hody told Brooke. “Do not tell a soul that the money came from me,” he said. “Tell them it’s a blessing from God.” Brooke put the money in the envelope and went back to work.
Mr. Childress was a kind, humble man,” Brooke told me. “Each and every month, year after year, he would walk into the drug store and hand me 100 dollars. I kept my word of not telling anyone, even the family. Eventually, I did start taking a little money here, a little money there, just to help people who were struggling.”
What an incredible testimony and witness!
Hody wasn’t interested in making a name for himself….
… or getting recognition.
Instead, he simply wanted to use his own resources to help those who were struggling and show them the love of Jesus.
We could all learn something from Hody’s story.
As the Bible says:
“But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. And your father who sees in secret will reward you.” Matthew 6:3
Hody was more concerned about what God thought about his giving, and didn’t give money so he could be popular or get rewards from men.
Let us all pray and ask God to help us steward the resources He has given us well, so that we too can be a blessing to those He has placed in our path.
When you give, do you give in secret?

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
