Every baby is precious and created by our heavenly Father.
But when one woman found out her baby had Down syndrome – she didn’t want to go through with her pregnancy.
Although her state would not allow her to kill her baby – she drove across state lines and did the unthinkable.
Kelly Shannon shared with ABC News that she struggled to become pregnant after having her first baby, and had been “praying” she would finally get pregnant again.
So when she was blessed with the news of a baby – one would think she would be overjoyed and on her hands and knees thanking God.
But she wasn’t.
Shannon’s doctors told her it was likely her baby would have Down syndrome and other medical problems that would mean her baby likely wouldn’t make it.
Of course, we know doctors get it wrong all the time – and countless babies who were given a death sentence go on to live long and happy lives.
But since Shannon lived in Alabama, abortion is just about banned with only one hospital performing it under special circumstances.
Shannon had to plead her case to a medical committee…
… who would then decide if Shannon would be allowed to get the abortion.
By God’s grace- they DENIED her request for an abortion.
ABC News reported:
“Shannon said the committee — made up of 13 physicians in the University of Alabama, Birmingham’s Maternal Fetal Medicine Department — said its decision was final unless the fetus developed a complication called hydrops fetalis, in which large amounts of fluid build up in a baby’s tissues and organs causing extensive swelling.
“The committee felt that since each condition was by itself potentially survivable — not that they would lead to any kind of quality of life, just that they could potentially lead to life — that under Alabama law they did not think that my case met the criteria for termination,” Shannon said.”
But instead of taking that as a sign from God she was meant to have her baby – Kelly took matters into her own hands.
Shannon drove across state lines to Virginia – and had her abortion there.
Her precious baby, who had a chance at surviving and living a long life, was killed.
Truly tragic.
Children with intellectual or physical disabilities are targeted for abortions – but they deserve a chance at life just like every other baby.
Shannon claimed the experience was “traumatic” and she wouldn’t wish it on anybody.
ABC News continued:
“This has been the single most painful and traumatic experience of my life and our lives, and anybody who wants to stand up and say that abortions are wrong or that people shouldn’t be able to make their own decisions about abortion care just need to recognize that it’s not a black and white issue,” Shannon said. “It is complicated and I wouldn’t wish this on anybody.”
But it is a black and white issue.
A life is a life – at the moment of conception.
And every baby deserves the right to be born.
