In Uganda, a major spiritual revival is sweeping the country causing people to leave Islam and convert to Christianity – but not without a price.
And for one young family who recently became Christians – hardline Muslims demanded they denounce Christ at once.
When the family didn’t, they were all sprayed with acid – including a 13-year-old girl – and just wait until you hear the details.
You see, in America, we take for granted the freedom we have to be Christians.
Sure, we may face institutional discrimination, which is ever-increasing, but in the US it’s unlikely a recently converted Christian family is going to be sprayed with acid for following Jesus.
But in places like Uganda – Christians are literally risking their lives for leaving Islam behind.
In one small Ugandan village, Juma Waiswa and his wife converted to Christianity as well as their 13-year-old daughter.
But once their relatives and extended family learned they no longer practiced Islam, they were furious and called a group meeting with other members in the town.
Morning Star News reported:
“During the meeting we were asked about our salvation, and we affirmed to them that we had believed in Jesus and converted to Christianity,” Waiswa told Morning Star News. “They told us to renounce Jesus, but we stood by the newly founded faith in Jesus.”
This precious family could have renounced Christ to appease their family. But they didn’t – they stood true, even though they knew it could get them killed.
The Muslim family members continued to be outraged that the name of Jesus was being lifted up – so they started shouting verses from the Koran at them and beating them.
Then the unthinkable happened.
They actually took acid and sprayed it all over the family – including the 13-year-old girl who ended up with serious injuries.
Morning Star News continued:
“When we refused to recant our faith in Jesus, my father, Arajabu, recited some koranic verses, and after that they forcefully started beating us with sticks as prescibed in the Koran, claiming that we were apostates,” Waiswa said. “As this was not enough, my father went inside the room and picked up a bottle of acid and began spraying it on us while the group started shouting, ‘Allah Akbar [God is greater], you deserve death,’ and then disowned us.”
Initially they did not know what kind of liquid was sprayed on them, he said.
“But as we were fleeing for our lives, we started feeling some serious itching that continued till the pain intensified.”
Sadly, this isn’t the first time Christians in Uganda have been attacked for following Christ.
27-year-old Shamira Nakato and her two small children were hung to death by her Muslim husband because they converted to Christianity.
There was also the employer who sent hitmen to murder his Christian employee.
In this dark world that is not our home, we must continue to pray for our brothers and sisters in Uganda and all around the world who face unspeakable persecution.
May God make His presence known to them, and provide comfort and boldness as they stand for their faith – whatever the cost.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
