The COVID-19 pandemic has caused worldwide suffering, leaving many people unable to make ends meet.
So when a local church learned that students in their own school district owed a whopping $38,000 in unpaid debt for school lunches – they decided to step in and act.
And once you hear the incredible way this church became the tangible hands and feet of Jesus, you’re bound to be inspired to take action in your own community.
Idlewild Baptist Church had been helping their community long before the pandemic.
But once they saw the economic difficulties residents in their own neighborhood were experiencing – they decided to showcase the tangible love of Christ in the most incredible way.
In an incredibly generous act, they canceled $38,000 in school lunch debt that struggling teenagers were expected to pay.
Yerusha Bunag, the director of local missions at Idlewild, shared her heart behind the church’s decision to step in and pay off the debt the students owed.
The Christian Post reported:
“We wanted students to know that God loves them; that in God, all debts are paid. So that’s what we did. We paid the debt for juniors and seniors at Hillsborough County and the debt for all students at Pasco County.”
The director also stated that the church “did this to be a witness” of “the incredible love that God has for them.”
She said the aim was to show the community that “we are administrating God’s grace to them through these charitable efforts.”
What a beautiful story and important reminder for us all.
When Jesus Christ died on the cross for the sins of the world, the shedding of His blood canceled a debt we could never pay.
Once and for all, Jesus’s death and resurrection showcased His triumph over death.
And on judgement day, because of His sacrifice, those who put their faith in Him and make Him Lord of their life are promised to have their slate wiped clean by the covering of His blood.
Let the story of this church inspire all of us to act – and point those around us to Christ!
Think about those around you who are struggling – whether it’s a relative or a friend – and look for creative ways to help them carry their burdens.
Whether it’s paying their mortgage or rent for a month, or even buying groceries, you too can show the tangible love of Jesus and point others to Him.
Of course, let them know that if they place their faith in Him, they too will have all their “debts” and sins canceled forever when they enter into eternity with Him.
