What do you expect to hear from the professional gaming community?
If you know anything about professional video gamers, you probably expect to encounter questionable language or vapid conversation.
But one gamer recently stepped out of the box to speak out about abortion.
On his 28th birthday, he thanked his mother for choosing life.
Richard Tyler Blevins, better known as ‘Ninja’ in the online gaming community, seems like a stereotypical gamer – at first.
In the swiftly growing industry of streaming, video game players share videos of their gaming exploits to an online community via platforms of YouTube or Twitch. For younger generations, these platforms are a place to gather and share their interest in a world that their parents aren’t likely to understand.
It’s no surprise, then, that professional gamers can have a huge impact on their followers.
Ninja is best known for his playthroughs of the popular game Fortnite, and he reportedly collected $10 million for his streaming activity in 2018. He has a devoted fan base that tunes in for every video.
The young man sports fun T-shirts, brightly colored hair, and an approachable personality that keeps fans coming back. While playing through games like Fortnite, he answers questions and chats with those watching the videos.
The video he released on his 28th birthday was something a little different than his normal livestream, though. The gamer took a break from playing Fortnite to talk about a deeper issue.
“For those of you guys who don’t know,” Ninja began abruptly, “I was not supposed to be born, essentially.”
“A lot of the doctors told my mom that I had spina bifida or Down syndrome or a number of diseases, and that I should be aborted.”
This was a shocking revelation for many of Ninja’s young fans, but it’s a terribly common occurrence in modern medicine.
Many parents who receive discouraging prenatal diagnoses of conditions like Down syndrome, spina bifida, or other disabilities are encouraged to abort their babies. Some doctors even argue that women have a “moral duty” to abort babies with disabilities.
These doctors believe that babies with disabilities won’t have lives worth living.
It takes courage for new parents to go up against the medical community in this regard and say they will keep their baby, no matter the disability or cost.
But that’s exactly what Ninja’s mother did.
“She said no to all the doctors,” he continued emotionally. “And found one that was like, ‘You know, we’re going to have this baby.’ And fast-forward nine months after that, and I was born. Nothing wrong with me.”
There’s a whole community of gamers who are thankful for that! Ninja’s video was streamed to over 14 million followers, who were able to hear a pro-life message straight from their role model.
“My mom is a saint and an angel and I love her to death,” Ninja went on, recognizing his mother’s perseverance and love.
“And it’s one of those things where had she listened to one of those doctors or even one of those people, you guys wouldn’t be here.”
Instead of taking the glory for his success as a gamer and streamer, Ninja deflected the credit to his mother’s actions in saving his life as an unborn child.
“No one would be in this room.”
Ninja ended the video by thanking his followers for their support. After all, they’re the ones who’ve made his dream job as a streamer possible!
Ninja recognizes the power of the platform he has as a professional gamer. Not only did he share a strong pro-life message with his young fans, but he also took action against Twitch after the streaming platform tried to push pornographic content on his account.
He apologized profusely to fans and went out of his way to make sure they didn’t encounter such content again.
He’s not just the world’s best gamer—he’s a good guy, too.
The streamer is happily married to wife Jessica, who manages his gaming business and does some streaming of her own. The two do their best to model a healthy relationship for their followers, who are often impressionable teenagers.
Keep praying that Ninja’s story will inspire many young people to investigate the facts of abortion for themselves.
