As the Taliban exercises its regained power, Christians in Afghanistan are bracing themselves and turning to the Lord for wisdom and comfort.
The International Christian Concern (ICC) spoke with one Christian in Afghanistan who reiterated that all Afghan Christians know the upcoming danger they face for practicing their faith.
But instead of fleeing and running away – you’ll be amazed at how the faith of these believers is proving true in the midst of the storm.
ICC reported:
“Every Muslim-background believer like myself that convert to Christianity, he knows the consequences of their conversion. Islam is very clear, Quran is very clear, Hadith is very clear for the apostasy, it’s… it’s death.
They give three days after that it’s death if they don’t repent… and there is no mercy on those people.”
Even though they know it could cost them their lives, these faithful Christians refuse to renounce their faith.
Yet still, the Taliban is not hiding their intent to persecute Christians.
In fact, Christian pastors have been put on notice that the Taliban knows where they are – and they’re coming for them.
The senior editor for World Magazine, Mindy Belz, tweeted:
“A person who works with house church networks in Afghanistan reports its leaders received letters last night from the #Taliban warning them that they know where they are and what they are doing. The leaders say they aren’t going anywhere. So it begins.”
Christ tells His people persecution will come.
While followers of Jesus know this, it’s different when it actually begins to happen.
But instead of cursing God or questioning His goodness, Afghan Christians are staying strong in their faith and turning to God in their moments of despair.
They’re reading through Scripture and choosing to trust in the Lord, even amongst the injustice they are facing.
Anyone can proclaim to know Christ and trust Him when times are good.
But it’s the true test of a Christian to remain faithful to Him, knowing it will cost them their lives.
Let us take a moment and pray for Afghanistan.
Dear Heavenly Father, we lift up our Christian brothers and sisters in Afghanistan to you.
Lord we thank you for the mighty way you opened their eyes to the truth – that you alone are God and only you can save the world from sin. We praise you for the courage you have given them amongst persecution, that the Word is planted firmly in their minds and hearts showing their faith is not fickle, but true and genuine.
God, we ask you to please protect them, give them wisdom on how and when to speak. Please Lord, keep their faith strong through this time, may they not lose heart or courage.
We pray in the name of Jesus that even more Muslims will come to put their faith in you. God, we pray for Your will to be done, even if we don’t understand why these things are happening.
We thank you that we can rest in knowing you are sovereign and always on your throne, and that vengeance is yours alone. Please Lord, may we never forget to intercede for our brothers and sisters in Afghanistan. Prompt our hearts to pray for them and stand with them in this battle.
We pray all this in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
While things are sure to get worse, as Christians, we can take peace in knowing that our Lord was persecuted too, and we are not greater than Him.
This world is not our home, and one day He will make all things right.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
