Can you imagine signing a contract for $128 million? Probably not!
But that’s what just happened to Carson Wentz, a pro quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles.
But rather than focusing on how he’s financially set for life, Wentz chose to put his faith on display and credit Jesus for his success.
Wentz has undoubtedly worked hard for his place in the NFL. He played football throughout his time at North Dakota State University before the Eagles drafted him in 2016.
Wentz played with the Eagles for two seasons before signing a four-year, $128 million contract extension in June 2019.
This deal will keep him playing for the Eagles until the end of the 2024 season.
“Can’t even explain to you how excited I am right now,” Wentz confessed in a video he uploaded to Twitter.
“From the moment I got drafted here, I knew this place was special.”
After years of training, practice, and climbing the ranks, Wentz could easily start boasting about his own talent and commitment.
But he’s always been careful to acknowledge God’s work in his life.
“I want to thank my good Lord and Savior Jesus Christ first and foremost for just giving this opportunity and these blessings,” he said after learning about his contract extension.
Wentz’s open gratitude to God isn’t new, either.
He’s shared his faith openly throughout his time as a football player, even though he recently admitted it can be tricky.
“You’re always walking that fine line, without a doubt,” he told NBC Sports in 2017.
“I always tell people, for example, if you love your job, you love your wife, you love what you do, you’re going to talk about it.”
He continued, “Well, I love Jesus. That’s what I love, so I’m going to talk about it.”
It’s a beautifully simple reminder of how to share our faith with others. Do we love Jesus enough to talk about Him?
“I’m not going to force it down your throat, either,” Wentz cautioned in the same interview.
“So it’s definitely a fine line that I’m constantly trying to walk, and at the end of the day, just kind of how I live and what I’m about and hopefully can kind of speak through.”
Wentz has definitely walked and lived in testament to his faith in the NFL. And it’s evident that with his new contract with the Eagles, God is giving him a platform to speak further about his faith.
Wentz is staying humble and down-to-earth as he embraces the opportunity.
“I want to thank my wife. She’s been amazing,” he said before going on to thank his coaches, teammates, and fans.
It’s inspiring to imagine the impact Wentz could have on Eagles fans through the next four years.
“I knew the Eagles had the most passionate fans in the world, in all of sports,” Wentz said, adding that he’s excited to build a legacy with them.
Not only is Wentz a faithful witness on the football field with fans, but he’s also trying hard to give back to the Philadelphia community and the world in general.
His AO1 Foundation, launched in 2017, is dedicated to encouraging people and communities by showing them God’s love.
The foundation ministers to individuals and groups in several ways, such as food distribution, outdoor activities, discipleship, and a partnership with a sports program in Haiti.
Wentz is characteristically humble about his foundation’s work, but his Eagles teammates support him proudly.
Looking forward to his four-year stint with the Eagles, Wentz said, “It’s going to be a fun ride.”
“By no means is the work done. We’re just getting started.”
But Wentz knows that God will make a way for whatever He wants to do in Wentz’s life.
After all, Wentz’s favorite Bible verse is Proverbs 3:5-6.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
Let’s remember to pray for Carson Wentz as he witnesses to fans and other players in the NFL.
