COVID-19 has disrupted the lives of countless Americans, causing many families who were well-off to fall into extreme poverty.
But instead of sitting back and ignoring the pain of others, these high-school students decided to step up in the most incredible way.
Truly living out the command to “love thy neighbor,” wait till you hear about the amazing operation they’ve created to help ease the pain of those in desperation.
It’s estimated nearly 4 million Americans have been jobless for at least 6 months.
Not ignoring the reality of those in pain, a local high-school in Texas decided to stand in the gap and help the students and families who were suffering during this trying time.
With the help of their school principal, these students created an inhouse grocery store – which provides free food to the community!
They also provide clothing and other necessities based on a point system.
The store stays stocked with donations from local businesses and students help pass out the food to those who come in.
What a beautiful way to give back and show the love of Christ in a tangible way!
The store manager, high-school student Hunter Weeterman, shares the way the store has changed him personally.
ABC 7 reported:
“I like seeing the smiles and seeing like how appreciative they are and knowing that they are thankful that we’re doing something like this,” Weeterman said. “I think it’s very important because a lot of people don’t see the good, even though it’s hard right now.”
Imagine the relief a struggling family must feel no longer having to choose between paying their mortgage or putting food on the table.
Teenagers often get a bad reputation, but this is just another story of the good they are doing to make the world a better place.
And while the high-school principal is committed to helping his community in such a real way – he also admits the store serves multiple purposes.
Not only is he wanting to help bring relief to the community, but his goal is to teach his students job skills and show them the importance of giving back, reports ABC 7.
What a beautiful way to teach teenagers responsibility while helping those in their community.
In a society that is so “me” focused, it’s important we continue to teach our teenagers the world is not all about them.
Especially during these trying times with everyone looking for answers, may the pandemic point them to the everlasting truth found in Jesus Christ, who did not come to be served, but to serve.
There are ways all around us we can help those who are struggling – we just need to be receptive and open to meeting those needs.
