Each year, there seems to be a debate about whether Christians should participate in Halloween.
On one side of the argument, you have people saying “absolutely!” and they’ll dress up their children in any costume – including witches and even devils – without hesitation.
And then there are Christians who refuse to participate in Halloween and shun all things associated with the holiday – so who is right?
When it comes to celebrating Halloween – it ultimately comes down to a motive of the heart – and conviction of principles.
In itself – there is nothing harmful about a child dressing up as a superhero or princess and trick-or-treating with their siblings and friends.
But Halloween does have pagan origins – and many argue that some take it “too far” with going to haunted houses and celebrating the “dark side” of Halloween with decorations like witches and tombstones.
Some families even dress up their kids in scary costumes like devils, witches, and even serial killers…
… and think nothing of it.
But what does the Bible say?
To start – whatever we do should be glorifying God.
You may have never thought about it, but is dressing up like a witch, or having skeletons and death paraphernalia in your front yard glorifying God?
… yet you embrace it as fun.
Some churches host Halloween alternatives like harvest festivals with games and activities.
Kids still come dressed up – often as a Bible character – but in nothing dark or scary like you’d find in the secular world.
But whether you decide to celebrate Halloween or not – make sure to check your motives and your heart.
It’s also important not to insist that others celebrate the same way as you.
If the Christian family down the street goes trick-or-treating in princess or superhero costumes – it doesn’t mean they are Satan worshipers!
Likewise, if another Christian family refuses to participate in trick-or-treating, but will go to a harvest festival – it doesn’t mean they are legalists who don’t know how to have fun.
The most important thing to remember is bringing glory to God.
Perhaps if you are handing out candy you could hand out Gospel tracts too.
Who knows – you may even be able to share the Gospel with a parent!
Pray and discern how to proceed – and remember these wise words.
“Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel.” – Philippians 1:27

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
