Whether you feel bitterness or hurt when someone wrongs you, or anxiety about your current circumstances, as Christians, it’s not a question of if the fiery darts will come – but when.
And when Satan launches a fiery arrow in your direction, you may feel powerless to stop it.
The good news is, as Christians, God has given us everything we need to combat the fiery arrows thrown our way – and here’s how we can extinguish the darts once and for all.
To start, we must remember we are always in a spiritual battle.
While Christ has already won the war – as long as we’re on this side of heaven, the attacks from the Evil One will come.
In order to shield us from Satan’s attacks, we are commanded to put on the full armor of God – and each piece of armor has a specific purpose.
When it comes to quenching those fiery darts, the shield of faith is essential.
“In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one.” – Ephesians 6:16
Yet, instead of turning to our faith in Christ when we’ve been wronged or hit with a tragedy, many of us seek relief from the external world.
We’ll count on another person to “make us feel better” or rely on self-help techniques like “breathing exercises” to help us remain calm.
Sometimes we even try to “think positive” or “fake it until we make it.”
The truth is, none of these methods can extinguish the fiery darts Satan throws our way – they just aren’t strong enough.
But Jesus IS strong enough and He has promised to be there for us even in the darkest of seasons.
And it is only through the shield of our faith found in Jesus Christ that the Evil One can be defeated.
So how do we pick up our shield of faith?
It starts with remembering what God has already done for us through Jesus, and the promises of His Word.
As Desiring God reminds us:
“The shield is a shield of faith, and faith means trusting all that God has promised to be for us in Jesus Christ. So, turn your heart to Jesus Christ.
You don’t need to get rid of your bitterness first. Because of Jesus’s death on the cross, you can turn to him as you are, confessing your sin and asking him to forgive you for your bitterness. And he will.
Then ask him to help you use the shield of faith to extinguish this flaming dart of bitterness.”
Fellow Christian, if you are walking through a season of spiritual attack, make sure you put on the full armor of God, every single day.
Pray the scriptures throughout the day, and as you recall the verses on all God has promised, they will renew your soul.
Do not give the Enemy a foothold in your life or allow you to grow bitter or hard.
In Jesus we are overcomers, so as you walk through a challenging period or face spiritual attack, stand strong with your shield of faith and quench the fiery arrows launched your way.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
