“Please, God, send your Holy Spirit to save my son.”
Based on a true story, Chrissy Metz plays Joyce Smith as she desperately pleads with God to save her son in the upcoming new movie Breakthrough.
Best known for her strong role in This is Us, an NBC TV drama series, actress Chrissy Metz lets her personal relationship with Jesus shine through in her new starring role.
“It’s an amazing true story about the power of prayer and the power of love.”
And you can now watch the first sneak peek preview on the actress’ own Instagram page:
“When I was given the gift of even reading the script, I was so moved by it, because we’re all looking for something greater than ourselves,” Metz told The Christian Post.
“I’ve had some hardships myself, obviously, not to this degree but things that were really trying. And the only thing that sort of kept me going was my faith.”
We occasionally hear an actress here and there thank God at the last second of an award acceptance speech and celebrate for this small sparkle of faith.
But Chrissy Metz takes her belief in God center stage and is not afraid to defend the faith in the face of pressure from the largely secular Hollywood establishment.
“It is hard I think, now, to just be really vocal about your faith … because people want to think ‘it’s not cool,’ but I’m like, I don’t care! I have to do what I have to do for me, and I know that the only person that shows up for me time and time again, is God, and is that higher power that’s greater than myself,” explained Miss Metz.
“So I have to honor that. Not because I have to, because I want to, even though people might think it’s the uncool thing to do. For me, there’s no question about it.”
The limelight seems to call many away from God’s Light. Unsurprisingly, most actresses and actors either deny or hide faith in God, as it is a very unpopular opinion amongst their peers and followers. Declaring faith from such a position of influence in society is dangerous for their careers and even livelihood in some cases.
Chrissy Metz isn’t ignorant of the fact, either. Instead, she honestly shares: “I know it can be a challenge because the whole problem is that we all want to fit in, we want to be liked and validated… So when we’re different, we feel it”.
However, Chrissy chooses to believe that God’s saving power is strong enough to protect her now just as it brought her through the darkest moments of her past.
This star is best known for her strong role in “This Is Us”, an NBC TV series, where themes of family and faith are threaded into the storyline (though it is not a faith-based series).
It also promotes empathy and other uniquely moralistic traits uncommon to front-runner television. Many may remember her for some minor films she played in, as well as TV’s American Horror Story.
Chrissy Metz did not have an easy time getting to this place of victory, where her name is known and praised from Christian blogs to silver screen awards nominations.
Born in Florida in the ’80s, her life began in a tumultuous roar of pain, poverty, and confused emotions. Her father left the family with very little to live on, but Chrissy’s two siblings and their mom stuck together.
Their mother encouraged each of them to follow their God-given callings, no matter the odds.
From the age of 8 when their father left, Chrissy and her siblings were taught the values of positivity and hope for the future. They were taught to care for one another and put others before themselves, even from a place of extreme poverty.
This gave Chrissy and her sister a unique perspective as they moved to L.A. in their young adult years, the sister to pursue modeling and Chrissy to pursue her long-held dream of acting.
Humor and laughter played a key role for Chrissy in navigating her youth and she desired to share that spirit with the world. It was not easy though.
One day, looking at maxed out credit cards, mounting debt owed to family and friends, and $0.81 cents left rightly to her name, she cried out in despair truly questioning her purpose and efforts.
Dozens of auditions had yet to turn anything upward, though she gave them her best effort and stayed faithful to do all she could to enter the acting field.
Her heart began to fail over the distress, so she phoned home. After talking to her mother back in Florida, she was given the advice: “You can either be miserable here and not pursue your dreams, or you can be miserable in L.A. and at least pursue what you want.”
So, she determined that as long as there remained a dream in her soul, she would keep trying.
And shortly after this crisis moment, she was booked as Kate on “This Is Us”, which immediately became a huge hit. The waves of this show affect people of all walks of life, as the character-driven drama series displays real life and real, hard moments for characters very relatable to the general public.
Watching these characters navigate physical, emotional, and even moral challenges with positive choices have impacted many who tune in weekly for their dose of reality-checked alignment: that life IS hard, but there IS a way to find the positive, the best choice among the worst circumstances, and keep pressing on.
Through all of this, Chrissy lived a testimony of faith in the way she upheld positive lifestyle choices and attitude, but had not yet been given a platform on which to need to declare her belief in God.
Now as she enters this new role in “Breakthrough”, the opportunity was clearly open for her to speak out. Speaking about the film, Chrissy had this to say: “You have to have somebody to believe in something, somebody to hold on to that. And I think it’s so inspiring in the way that just when you think you can’t, and everybody else’s against you — that God is for you and that’s all that you need.”
In fact, God strengthened her to be bold enough to articulate how His saving power and strength was working in her all along: “There are times where you really feel like, it’s never going to get better, you’re down and out and we get in our heads and we build this fear around something that the only person, or the only thing that can subside that, is our faith in God. I know that from a personal plight of my life.”
Her faith shines bright in the dark backdrop of Hollywood.
Her path there is clearly set out by God, so let us pray that He keeps her faith strong, and her heart and mind stay on Him.
Chrissy’s testimony is clearly one of submission to a Will we sometimes have trouble accepting, yet we know God’s hand is always for us and not against us.
The more we align our hearts and minds with His Ways, the more we will walk in His blessings and be able to testify to His great faithfulness, just as Chrissy is choosing to exemplify.
