Open Doors listed Nigeria as the 9th most dangerous country in the world for Christians.
But despite the slaughtering of Christians at unprecedented levels, Biden has removed Nigeria from the “official” State Department list of religious freedom violators.
So why would Biden do such a thing?
Politics.
But first, it’s important to understand what is actually happening on the ground in Nigeria.
According to Open Doors, more Christians are murdered in Nigeria for their faith than any other country in the entire world.
Open Doors reports:
“Nigeria entered the top 10 of the 2021 World Watch List primarily because this violence has increased and began to spill out into other parts of Nigeria, and the government seems unable or unwilling to protect its Christian citizens.
Islamic extremist attacks have not abated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many Christians who are staying at home to combat the spread of the virus have been vulnerable to attack.”
And over the last few years, Christian Life Daily has reported on the violence against Christians in Nigeria.
From schoolchildren being kidnapped and held at ransom, to the precious 3-year-old boy who lost his life at the hands of Muslim extremists – now more than ever, Christians are being targeted.
So with the clearly documented evidence of Christians being killed in Nigeria, why would President Biden choose to remove them from the United States religious persecution list?
Some think it was a political power-play in anticipation of Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s visit to Nigeria.
Christian Headlines reported:
“Removing this largely symbolic sign of concern is a brazen denial of reality and indicates that the U.S. intends to pursue its interests in western Africa through an alliance with Nigeria’s security elite, at the expense of Christians and other victims of widespread sectarian violence, especially in the country’s predominantly Christian Middle Belt region,” said John Eibner, president of Christian Solidarity International (CSI).”
Of course, the State Department denies this is true.
But in reality, removing Nigeria from the list of religious freedom violators sends a message to the world that the United States is not concerned with the slaughtering of Christians and does not care about human rights violations.
It also sends a message to terrorists that they can keep killing Christians.
But regardless if Nigeria makes the official State Department’s list of “country of particular concern” – we know God is concerned with all the lives being slaughtered.
And we should be concerned too.
Please continue to pray for our brothers and sisters in Nigeria who face extreme persecution for their faith.
When one member of the body suffers, we all suffer.
