Nick Foles is a superstar NFL quarterback, a TV talk-show regular, and a bestselling author.
But he considers his Christian faith to be the most important part of his identity and wants to use his platform to share that faith with others.
That’s why he partnered with this ministry to reach young athletes in his community.
Founded in 1954, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) uses the powerful platform of sports “to reach every coach and every athlete with the transforming power of Jesus Christ.”
The ministry’s vision is to see the world impacted for Christ through the influence and witness of athletes and coaches of all levels. FCA strives to accomplish this goal by leading coaches and athletes into a relationship with Christ and fellowship with His church.
People in the world of professional sports are often desperately in need of spiritual guidance, and FCA recognizes that coaches and athletes like Nick Foles also have immense spheres of influence.
FCA is committed to the ideals of integrity, service, teamwork, and excellence. The ministry wants to see athletes imitate Christ by demonstrating these qualities on and off the field – and the former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Nick Foles is doing his best to follow that calling.
Foles originally partnered with FCA to start “Huddles” in his beloved city of Philadelphia. These 8-week programs offer more than one hundred young athletes from north and south Philadelphia the opportunity to engage in God’s Word through the lens of sports.
Foles wanted nothing more than to get God’s Word into the kids’ hands, so when he noticed that FCA staff had to collect Bibles at the end of each meeting, he made the decision to contribute his own funds to purchase Bibles for each young athlete.
“I want to make sure each kid walks away with a Bible,” he told the FCA staff, “even if they just show up once.”
Every student who attended the Huddles received a Bible of their very own—and spiritual guidance from a professional athlete they looked up to.
That’s the basic method of evangelism espoused by FCA: the strategy of reaching “to and through the coach.” FCA believes in investing in leaders within the athletic community and minister to them with the Word of Christ before they endeavor to minister to others.
The organization believes that the words of Billy Graham are true – “A coach will impact more people in one year than the average person will in an entire lifetime.”
With that in mind, FCA seeks to engage coaches for the kingdom, equip them with Christ-centered training and resources, and empower them to share the good news of Jesus with their teams and fellow coaches.
“We desire to develop disciples who make disciples, assisting them so that they can in turn engage, equip, and empower others to know and grow in Christ and lead others to do the same,” says the ministry.
The life of a professional athlete can be so much more than accomplishments on the field. What happens, FCA wonders, when professional athletes turn their striving from athletic success to kingdom work?
“I [don’t] have to accomplish anything more on the football field to find fulfillment, and that’s a really special, beautiful thing when you can get to that point,” said Foles, who’s chosen to find his identity in Christ rather than his athletic prowess.
Even though he brought Philadelphia its first Lombardi Trophy in 2017, Foles has stayed humble and focused on Christ.
“It’s such a big, crazy accomplishment by earth’s standards. It’s pretty wild to be on this platform and just share what God has done in my life,” admitted the quarterback, who now plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
“I want to keep doing great things for the kingdom, but I also want to keep growing as a person,” he concluded.
“You don’t want to become stagnant, so I just continue to keep moving, growing, and staying in the Word.”
Through camps, Huddles for high school and college students, international trips, and leadership opportunities, FCA is equipping athletes just like Foles to keep growing in their faith and influence others for Christ throughout their athletic careers.
It’s a unique and powerful mission field, and FCA has reached millions of coaches and athletes with the good news of a Savior who loves them, no matter how they perform on the field.
