A popular self-help phrase being thrown around these days is the “You are enough” motto.
And people going through hard times wrongly cling to this false mantra, thinking that another burst of self-resilience and determination can get them through their current battle.
But the truth is – we aren’t enough – and we were never supposed to be. But here’s why that’s the best news ever.
The sin of pride leads us to falsely believe that we don’t need God – because we have it all “figured out.”
Of course, this is a lie from the enemy – but sadly, many Christians believe it.
Pride can also blind us into a works-based faith – thinking if we just “try harder” or “do more” that we’ll figure everything out and solve our latest problems.
In reality – sometimes God calls us to pause – to rest – and wait on His timing.
And it’s in our brokenness and pain that we can become humble – and realize the truth that we DO need God every hour of every day – and we can’t thrive in life without Him.
Humility opens us up to our own fragility – reminding us of the power of God – and how we desperately need Him.
This world may look down upon a “weak” person – but God’s world is different – and He promises us that when we are weak, He is strong.
“But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” 2 Corinthians 12:9.
This beautiful truth can keep us going when we think we can’t take our situation one more day.
In fact, while we may “think” we can intellectualize our way out of a crisis – we can’t.
Instead, the wise person turns to Scripture and prays for God’s guidance and direction.
God’s wisdom is perfect – He knows all things and sees all things, discerning every thought we have and every emotion we feel.
If life were simply “up to us” – we’d fail miserably – at least at what matters most.
We really do need Jesus to guide our steps and keep us on the narrow path so we don’t stumble into sin.
So if you’re going through a tough season and feel like you aren’t enough – then rest in the arms of Jesus and let Him carry you.
This doesn’t mean you should become paralyzed with inaction or that you don’t have a part in living out the life He’s called you to – but it does mean that you can live your life by God’s instructions – and trust Him with the results.
Once you realize you don’t (or won’t) have it “all figured out” – it will take a massive amount of pressure and anxiety off of you!
Spend time in God’s Word and learn from Him – His teachings are perfect – and He is enough for you and everything you need.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
