Laura was pregnant with her fourth child, but knew something was wrong when the tech became quiet during her 20-week ultrasound.
And then she received a startling diagnosis – her unborn baby had a fatal brain disorder.
But when the doctor asked her “what she wanted to do,” Laura didn’t hesitate to choose life – and here is her story.
To start, one can’t imagine the emotions running through a woman’s mind after receiving such heartbreaking news.
Grief, sadness, and resolve likely flowed through her body while she tried to process what was happening.
But the most beautiful part of Laura’s story is she never once even hesitated about having her baby – and her courage (even with pressure from the doctor to abort her baby) serves as an inspiration to any pregnant woman struggling with a fatal diagnosis.
Live Action reported:
“The doctor came in and told her that her daughter wasn’t going to survive. He immediately asked her and her husband, “What do you want to do?” Laura explained:
And I was like, what do you mean what do I want to do? I’m going to have a baby in four more months. That’s what I’m going to do.
[The doctor] said, “We could go take care of this.” Meaning, let’s go upstairs and start an induction [for an abortion]. But I knew there was a story here. And I need to embrace what that story was with our baby.
So Laura continued on with the pregnancy and gave birth to a little girl named Pearl, who only lived an hour and a half.
It’s one thing to claim to be “pro-life,” but it’s another thing to live it out when hard circumstances endure.
Laura knew she would lose her baby girl, yet she still carried on with the pregnancy and refused to abort the life growing inside her.
Imagine what a testimony her decision was to the medical team!
Sweet baby Pearl may have only lived an hour and a half, but those precious moments were full of pure love – from a mother who simply wanted her baby to experience any bit of life that she could.
There are no words to describe the pain of losing a baby – especially carrying a baby for so many weeks knowing the baby would likely not survive – but persevering anyway.
So many doctors are quick to push an abortion when things look bleak.
And in the case of Pearl, although it turned out her little body just couldn’t survive, Laura says Pearl knew the sound of her voice and experienced “nothing but love” as Laura sung to her during her short time here on earth.
What an amazing testimony of love and grace.
Laura’s story is part of the Focus on the Family’s ‘See Life’ series – and showcases her brave Christian faith through the storm.
Despite her unspeakable loss, she still calls Pearl a gift from God.
Live Action continued:
“If I close my eyes, I can still feel her cute little black head in the crook of my arms, that black curly hair, still in the crook of my arms – a moment I would do again to have back with me in a second. But what an honor, a life – that was a gift God gave us. A strange gift. It takes a long time to say it was a gift, because in the moment you’re thinking, what have we just been asked to do?”
May God grant Laura comfort and bless her life abundantly.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
