God is clear in His Word – He hates divorce.
Sadly, many men choose to ignore this portion of Scripture and leave their wives when things get tough or challenging.
However, it’s important to remember that walking out on your family can start a devastating chain of events that will impact generations to come.
Marriage is not only a covenant with one’s spouse, but a covenant with God.
And God sends a serious warning to those who willfully choose to violate a covenant with Him.
So men, if you’re considering walking out on your family, take a step back and hear what God has to say.
You Made A Vow
“When you make a vow to God, do not delay to fulfill it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow.” Ecclesiastes 5:4
When you stood at the alter and pledged your love and commitment to your wife – you made a vow.
Your promise to love her was meant to last throughout all seasons of marriage – even during the tough times.
While it can seem easy to just “walk away” when your love grows cold, remember the honor of your word.
You Will Impact Future Generations
Children are often the greatest casualties of divorce as their sense of stability and security is ripped out from underneath them.
If they don’t have a good example of a healthy marriage to model after, they’re likely to make bad relationship decisions themselves.
And since marriage is meant to reflect the covenant Christ has with His bride – the Church – divorce teaches children that God’s covenant means nothing.
This can cause confusion and anger in children, often causing them to doubt God’s faithfulness.
Your Prayers Will Be Hindered
“Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.” 1 Peter 3:7
God tells us if we love Him, we will keep His commands.
Scripture teaches men to love and honor their wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her.
Since remaining faithful to one’s wife mirrors being faithful to Christ, it’s no surprise that when men leave their wives their spiritual life is affected.
Desiring God says:
“How you treat your wife will affect how God treats you. Not because husbands earn his love by our works, but because our works reveal our faith.
If we’re faithful in marriage only when it’s pleasant or convenient, we betray how small God and his commands really are in our eyes.
We show whether we are truly men of faith or faithless men. And faithless men do not have the ear of heaven.”
Seek Him
So men, if you’ve run out of love for your wife, pray to God and ask Him to renew your love.
He is faithful, and He will honor your prayers.
Marriage is often a mirror and shows us the areas in our own heart we need to work on.
Sometimes coming face to face with ourselves is a frightening experience.
If you’re struggling in your marriage, don’t be embarrassed to get Godly counseling.
While this season may seem dark, if you remain faithful to your marriage, God will see you through.
