Pastor Salim Stephen Surin had just celebrated the joy of baptizing a group of new believers and was on his way home with his wife when a group of Hindu terrorists suddenly approached them.
His wife watched in horror as the Hindu terrorists brutally took the life of her sweet husband while she stood helpless and unable to intervene.
In a moment of desperation, she did all she knew how to do – cry out to God for help and deliverance. And you won’t believe what happened next.
The Christian Post reported:
“They killed my husband in front of my own eyes,” Tarsis, the wife of the slain pastor, was quoted as saying. “I was terrified seeing my husband collapse having been shot in the chest. I started to think about my children and loudly cried out to God to save me and take care of my [two] children.”
Tarsis said she pushed one of the three men who shot her husband, after which he pointed the gun toward her. “I ran into the thick bushes and the nearby forest. I probably walked for more than 10 hours to reach my home. I purposely did not take the road to avoid the attackers.”
God did keep Tarsis and her children safe, even though her husband was martyred for his faith.
Tarsis didn’t curse God – she pressed into Him in her darkest moment.
Her faith is an inspiration. She clung to God even when she didn’t know if she would even make it home alive.
As it turns out, Christians in this Indian village had been told to renounce their faith or else.
But instead of deciding this village was too “dangerous” to visit, Pastor Surin preached the Gospel and took the risk.
He knew he could die for his faith, but Pastor Surin also understood God commanded us to preach the Gospel and be willing to risk our lives to spread the message of Jesus Christ.
Here in America, we often take our religious freedoms for granted.
But let’s be honest…
…most of us can worship God here in the United States without fear of being shot in the streets.
Although the closing of churches and further government control over when believers can and cannot gather is troubling, at least for now, Christians aren’t persecuted in America like other areas of the world.
We must never stop praying for our brothers and sisters around the world who are faithfully preaching God’s Word where it could cost them their lives.
May we all have the courage to proclaim the truth of Jesus until our dying day, knowing as Christians we will inherit an eternal reward.
“And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” – Matthew 10:28
