An 11-year-old boy from Vietnam was caught up in an addictive cycle of violent video games that were so violent, the characters even committed suicide.
The violence haunted him and caused him to spiral into a deep depression, and things became so grim he even thought about taking his own life.
His mother was desperate, and despite her best efforts she couldn’t seem to help her son conquer this demon – so she began to pray without ceasing.
And to her amazement, God used the most incredible and unexpected thing to transform her son and break the spell of darkness which kept him trapped in bondage.
To start – the enemy will use any addiction to keep people separated from God. He exploits our weakness, and often lures us with things that “seem pleasurable,” and before we know what hit us, addiction has won the war.
Thankfully as Christians, we know that the light of Christ is stronger than any dark stronghold of this world.
But little Minh Viet was 8 years old and was not a Christian when he started playing video games, and now at the age of 11 he couldn’t seem to stop or give them up.
His mother knew something was wrong, and tried to get him to stop, even threatening to take away his iPad.
In response, the child lost it and told his mother he wanted to kill himself – this is when she knew without a shadow of a doubt she was in way over her head, and needed divine intervention to save her son.
Christian Broadcast Network reported:
“Minh Viet said, ‘I cried. I want to commit suicide.’ When asked how this is done, he said he learned how to do it from his gaming. ‘In the video games, they jump off the roof.’
Ngocanh Le, Minh Viet’s mother, says she was disturbed when her son told her this. ‘He says that I will commit suicide. He cannot do what adults expect him to do. He feels he is a failure.’”
One can’t imagine the horror this mother must have felt, hearing her child tell her he wanted to commit suicide.
This has got to be every mother’s worst nightmare.
But thankfully, Ngocanh Le was a Christian, so she began to pray for God to help her.
Her faith ended up saving her son, as God answered her prayer in the most unexpected way!
You see, Ngocanh knew she needed to meet her son where he was – he was addicted to video games, so she needed a creative way to shift his focus to something good.
Thankfully, back in 1981 CBN created a Bible Series named the Superbook Project, which tells the story of the Bible in animation!
The goal of the Superbook Project is to make the Bible available to children in every nation to teach them about Jesus!
And since the Superbook Project was available in Vietnam, Ngocanh introduced her son to this Bible animation series… and he loved it!
In fact, it changed his life.
Christian Broadcast Network continued:
“Ngocanh says, ‘He loves Superbook very much. He has shifted from video games to Superbook. He understands more about the Bible. And sometimes, he says to me he feels he’s very sinful. But God has saved him. He was touched by God. And in school, he got very much improvement.’
Through Superbook, Minh Viet has learned how much Jesus loves him.
Minh Viet says, ‘I love Jesus because he saved me many times.’”
Wow! What an incredible transformation.
Having the Bible available to people in their native tongue helps people around the world to be able to internalize the life-saving truth of the Bible, as it is in their own language.
Other cultures often learn through story-telling, so having the Bible in color and available for kids to tell the story of God’s plan for His people through His Son Jesus Christ is an incredible way to begin to teach children.
Satan seeks to keep people trapped in addiction and darkness, he has been a liar since the beginning and the truth is not in him. But Jesus invites us all to choose life – through Him.
In addition, never underestimate the prayers of a faithful mother!
She never gave up on her son, nor doubted God’s power to help her find a creative way to reach her son.
Let’s continue to pray 11-year-old Minh Viet will internalize the love Jesus has for him and continue to seek God’s truth instead of violent video games.
In addition, let’s continue to pray for all of those involved in the Superbook Project, that they will continue to have all funding and resources needed to make the Bible available to every child in every country.
Were you surprised to learn how quickly God was able to save Minh Viet from his violent video game addiction? Is this the first time you’ve heard about the Superbook Project? Do you think the Bible in animation is a good way to reach children around the world?
