8-year-old Kayzen Hunter loved dining at Waffle House with his family.
During his frequent dining adventures, Kayzen developed an affinity for a particular server named Devonte Gardner who he learned was going through a hard season.
Determined to help his friend get to the other side – Kayzen helped raise $70,000 for Devonte – and just wait until you read about this heartwarming story.
As it turns out – Devonte was living in an apartment with his two children when black mold was discovered.
He took them to a hotel – and experienced more difficulty when his car broke down and he was forced to walk to work – or hitch a ride.
Today reported:
“We wanted to find something affordable, so we moved into a low-income area,” Gardner says.
“We just got tired of infestations with rats and roaches and all this black mold. My daughters were getting sick. No heat and things like that. When it was cold outside, we had to bundle up with like four or five blankets in order to stay warm.”
“It was just horrible,” Gardner says, adding that he and his family have been living in a motel for the past eight months.”
Kayzen couldn’t bare to witness his favorite server struggle, so he felt compelled to do something.
With his parents help, he launched a GoFundMe page – with an original goal of $5,000.
But by God’s grace, Kayzen ended up raising over $100,000 for his friend!
What a miracle.
Devonte was stunned to learn of Kayzen and his family’s generosity and commitment to help him, and said he plans to take the funds and get a new apartment for his family along with a reliable car to get to work.
What a beautiful story of love and selflessness!
Kayzen is only 8-years-old – and when he saw a need – he helped meet it.
He is a wonderful example of how important it is to really be present with those we interact with because we never know the struggles another is going through.
In an interview with Good Morning America, Kayzen said he loved Devonte because he was funny and treated everyone with respect.
Sometimes we are called to meet the practical and tangible needs of others if we have the financial resources.
Other times we can connect them to those who can help them.
But most importantly, the greatest need any of us have is to have a personal relationship with Jesus and to know Him as Lord and Savior.
In addition to help meeting the tangible needs of those you come across – make sure to pray for them, and with them if they allow, that they will come to receive the greatest gift of all – Jesus Himself.
We wish Devonte and his family well as they rebuild their life – and praise God for using the love of an 8-year-old boy and his family to be the hands and feet of Jesus.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
