In this day and age many professional athletes are seen as wealthy, arrogant, superstars.
Tabloids cover their promiscuous lifestyles, substance abuse, arrest records, and the list goes on.
But these 5 professional Christian athletes are breaking the mold by making an impact for Christ!
1. Allyson Felix
Allyson Felix is an American superstar in the track and field world and holds multiple Olympic gold medals and numerous World Championships.
She is the most decorated Track and Field Olympic athlete and is a devout Christian.
She credits her faith as her inspiration to run. She gives credit for her running ability to God and feels it’s her responsibility to glorify Christ through her running.
Allyson is definitely a role model for young women in her sport and a spokeswoman for Christ.
2. David Robinson
David Robinson is a retired NBA superstar. David played college ball for the United States Navy where he became known by his nickname “The Admiral.”
David is part of the National Basketball Association Hall of Fame. During his career he helped the San Antonio Spurs win 2 NBA titles as well as the MVP award.
David is a professed Christian with a reputation for his charitable and generous characteristics.
The NBA gives a monthly community assist award which has been renamed the David Robinson Plaque. The award is given to NBA players for community involvement, philanthropy, and charity work.
Through his charity work and generosity, David is making a real impact for Christ.
3. Reggie White
Reggie White was an NFL superstar. He is the second all-time sack leader in the National Football League with 198. He was a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, and was selected 13 times to play in the Pro Bowl.
During his career, he was known for his Christian faith.
He was an ordained Evangelical minister and was known on the football field by his nickname “the Minister of Defense.”
Reggie passed away in 2004 from cardiac arrhythmia contributed by sleep apnea. After his death, the Reggie White Sleep Disorder Research and Education Foundation was formed in his honor.
In his death, Reggie’s legacy lives on by inspiring young athletes and making an impact for Christ.
4. George Foreman
George Foreman is a retired professional boxer. George is known by his nickname “Big George.”
He is an Olympic Gold Medalist and held the heavyweight champion title 2 times during his career. George was inducted into the World Boxing Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
After a near death experience following a boxing match, he pleaded with God to help him. After that experience, George became a born again Christian and dedicated his life to God.
Most people today know him as the creator of the George Foreman Grill, but others also know him as a man of faith.
George is an ordained Baptist minister. He started his preaching career on street corners before becoming a pastor in Houston.
Other than a boxer, entrepreneur, and minister, he is a father to 11 children. George is a talented and busy man with all his kids, but he is definitely making an impact for Christ.
5. Tim Tebow
Tim Tebow is probably one of the most famous Christian professional athletes of our generation.
He is currently a professional baseball player and was previously a professional NFL quarterback. A professional athlete in two major sports!
Tim became most famous in his football career at the University of Florida. While at Florida he won the prestigious Heisman Trophy in 2007 and won the National College Football Championship in 2006 and 2008.
During his college years, his Christian faith was apparent. From praying on the field, which came to be known as “Tebowing,” to the Bible verses he wore as his undereye paint.
After college, Tim had a brief career in the NFL. He played for the Denver Broncos and the New York Jets. Currently, he is playing minor league baseball for the New York Mets. Tim is a superstar on and off the field.
He does mission work in the Philippines where he preaches in schools and villages while also assisting with medical care. In the United States, he also preaches to schools, prisons, youth groups, and churches. Tim is a group leader for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes as well.
On top of all that, he has authored numerous inspirational books about his life and faith in Christ.
