When the Taliban regained control in Afghanistan, we knew darkness was right around the corner.
Women and children were sold into human trafficking and marriages against their will – and Christians were slaughtered without mercy.
And now things are so bad in Afghanistan, people are selling their own kidneys – even their precious children – for money. Just to be able to eat.
Shocking photos have surfaced out of Afghanistan showing men and women with scars on their sides where a kidney was removed from their body – and sold for a profit.
The Guardian reported:
“Taheri, a 27-year-old father of four, who scrapes together enough money for five loaves of bread each day by collecting and selling recycled rubbish, is looking for a buyer for his kidney.
“I have been asking private hospitals in Herat for many days if they need any kidney. I even told them if they need it urgently, I can sell it below the market price, but I haven’t heard back,” Taheri says. “I need to feed my children, I have no other choice.”
But even those who end up succeeding and finding a buyer for their kidney get so little money, it’s still not enough to survive – so they’ve resorted to more drastic measures.
Some parents report that while they love their children – they literally don’t have the resources to feed them, so they feel the only choice left is to sell them in order to keep them alive.
One mother spoke about her horrific situation.
Sky News reported:
“All they’d got left to sell now was one of their eight children – so they were thinking the unthinkable.
The 25-year-old mother told us: “About six months ago, my three-year-old son died of hunger. I can’t see them all lose their lives… at least this way, someone else will feed them.”
Her voice was breaking with emotion as she told us. Her husband told us he hadn’t yet decided which child to sell but such was their desperation he would sell the child off for less than the price of his kidney.
“We have nothing left to sell,” he said. “We have to sell our children now and I’m prepared to do this for even 20,000 Afghanis (about £150 or $200). I can’t go to sleep every night with them crying that they are hungry.”
Absolutely horrendous.
One can’t even imagine being in this situation – to think that the only way out is selling a child.
Our hearts ache for the people in Afghanistan.
The poverty and despair they continue to endure at the hands of oppressive leaders who seek to maintain control over every aspect of their lives is truly unconscionable.
While countless Christians have already lost their lives in Afghanistan – there are still Christians there meeting underground.
We must continue to pray for the people in Afghanistan – that they will come to know Jesus and find true salvation.
In addition, let us pray for those who are hungry and pray they will be provided for so they won’t be forced to mutilate their bodies and sell their own children just to put food on the table.
Father God, our hearts ache at such evil and oppression in this world. Lord, we pray for your Spirit to continue to move in Afghanistan – and bring your Gospel truth to those who are hurting and suffering. We know you are sovereign and always in control. God, we pray for the protection of all the precious children – that you will spare their lives from evil and draw them to you at a young age. We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
