Pastor Ram Niwas and his wife Pinky had converted from Hinduism to Christianity and were quietly praying in their home when they were suddenly attacked.
A group of Hindu extremists broke into their home and beat them with sticks, inflicting serious injuries.
Even more tragic, the couple knew the attackers – they were part of Pastor Niwas’s own family – and you’ll be crushed to know how much damage they did.
As it turns out, it was Pastor Niwas’s four brothers who attacked the couple, as they were outraged their brother is now a Christian.
Not only did Pastor Niwas leave Hinduism, but part of his ministry includes reaching out to “the untouchables” – a group in India labeled as outcasts that nobody wants to associate with.
Of course as Christians, we know God cares about every soul, which is why Pastor Niwas’s ministry of showing the love of Christ to this group is so important.
So with escalated anger, the brothers broke into the pastor’s home and began beating both him and his wife with sticks.
Pinky suffered head injuries which required medical treatment and Pastor Niwas’s shoulder was fractured, reported Christian Solidarity Worldwide.
Pastor Niwas already has a disability he acquired from childhood and now had to endure even more pain – in addition to watching his wife get beaten.
The latest attack on peaceful Christians simply worshiping our Lord and Savior shows just how much extremists in India are determined to intimidate Christians to denounce their faith.
What makes things even more complex are the “anti-conversion” laws currently in place in several Indian states.
These “anti-conversion” laws assume Christians are fraudulently using money to convert Hindus to Christianity – and although no Christian has been convicted of violating such laws – many Hindus use the law to try and make false accusations against Christians.
The Christian Post reported:
“Since the current ruling party took power in 2014, incidents against Christians have increased, and Hindu radicals often attack Christians with little to no consequences,” noted Open Doors’ World Watch List last year, which ranked India as the 10th worst country for Christians.
“The view of the Hindu nationalists is that to be Indian is to be Hindu, so any other faith — including Christianity — is viewed as non-Indian. Also, converts to Christianity from Hindu backgrounds or tribal religions are often extremely persecuted by their family members and communities,” Open Doors said at the time.”
Let us pray that Pastor Niwas and his wife have a full recovery and will remain faithful in their mission to serve the Lord – even though they are ostracized by their own families.
May his ministry to the “untouchables” transform an entire group of people to know and accept Christ – further spreading His Gospel message to every corner of India.
And finally, while Hindu extremists continue to harm fellow Christians, let’s pray the supernatural power of God will reach them and transform their hardened hearts.
