The United Methodist Church has been fighting against advocates of the sin of homosexuality for quite some time.
Now, one of those groups is putting forth a shocking suggestion for the UMC.
Will the third largest denomination in America give in? And what implications might this have on churches across the country, and even around the world?
Although their vote earlier this year saw the traditional views on marriage win against the compromise being pushed by many pro-homosexuality supporters, those who advocate acceptance of the sin by the church have not given up.
They have once again petitioned the international denomination to hold a vote to allow homosexual “marriages” and even allow leaders and pastors who are actively engaging in unrepentant homosexual behavior.
In fact, one such group, UM-Forward, has proposed a plan that would shatter The United Methodist Church into four different denominations.
All four would have their own stance on the subject. However, the group states they would all be, “grounded in the Wesleyan view of grace and holiness, commitment to mission, and connectionalism.”
But the group also states that the denominations would have, “a different understanding of how this heritage faithfully serves the present age.”
If they win, this restructuring would be a compromise on the Word of God.
UM-Forward claims that all four of these new “denominations” would still work together and “may be in full communion with each other and part of a global convention or worldwide Wesleyan Communion.”
But they would be separate in their individual beliefs and doctrines about sin, which would also go against the will of the Word.
The four denominations in the plan are:
Traditionalist Methodist Church
Moderate Methodist Church
Progressive Methodist Church
Liberation Methodist Church
The leader of UM-Forward, “Reverend” Alex da Silva Souto, says that this plan could be the only way to stop the United Methodist Church from splitting up.
Except it is precisely the definition of splitting up!
And Jesus Christ prayed for unity in His church. Those advocating acceptance of sin are now advocating for further division in the church.
The Methodist Church has decided to vote once again next year to make a decision that, either way, would cause members to flood out of the UMC.
As Christians, it is important for us to have a Biblical view on sin and apostasy in the church.
However, the culture we live in today condemns so much of our Biblical views that many are bringing apostacy into the church for their pleasure or to please those around them.
Compromising on God’s Holy Word, or trying to ride down the middle of the road, is something that God’s Word clearly teaches against, “I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.” (Revelation 3:15-16, KJV)
It is important we stand firm in the Word of God and all that it says. His Word clearly states that homosexuality, as well as sexual immorality – which is defined as any sexual conduct outside of the marriage of one man and one woman – is a sin.
“If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable.” (Leviticus 20:13, KJV)
“Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another.
Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done.” (Romans 1:26-27, KJV)
“Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10, KJV)
“Flee from sexual immorality.” (1 Corinthians 6:18, KJV)
So, in spite of the clarity of the scriptures on all sexual immorality, those who advocate acceptance of the sin of homosexuality are determined to go against scripture.
This is just some of the apostasy spoken of in Revelations.
This is something we must all fight against!
And what could be the ramifications of the UMC compromising on this matter?
Well, with the United Methodist Church being an international church and the third largest denomination in the United States, the allowance of pastors who are engaged in homosexuality and the perversion of the definition of marriage may start a snowball effect even bigger than the one we are already witnessing.
The world is watching how Christians handle these situations. And Satan is watching how we handle these situations, as well.
If we compromise, then that is a win for evil.
But if we stand our ground and fight against the depravity and apostasy, then Good wins and the world will be changed forever!
Help us by praying for people to listen to and follow God’s Holy Word!
And together, let’s speak the truth about sin, not just in the United Methodist Church, but in all churches everywhere.
