As we read through the Psalms, we can feel the pain and anguish David experienced in his seasons of desperation.
From his friends turning to foes, to the threat of death, and even in his loneliness, the laments of David as he cries out to God can teach us valuable lessons.
From learning to trust God and wait on His timing, to surrendering our will to the One who is greater, here are just a few ways the Psalms can deepen our faith.
To Wait On God
“For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.” Psalm 62:1-2
Despite the duress in David’s life, he patiently waited on God – and had confidence God would deliver Him.
Oftentimes when we find ourselves in situations that seem too big for us – the enemy can trick us into doubting God can “get us out of this one” or even deceive us into thinking God doesn’t care.
But David teaches us the importance on having a steadfast trust to wait on God to deliver us.
If you struggle with patience, you aren’t alone.
But a quick read through the Bible will highlight the character of God, and remind us all that He always keeps His promises – which includes being there for His children during their darkest hours.
Full Surrender
“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.” Psalm 139: 23-24
In humility, David continued to surrender himself to God, asking God to search and purify his heart to discern his true motives.
And in this surrender, David gave full control of his life to God – letting God have His way with him.
Even though we think we are in “control” of our lives – all it takes is a massive tragedy to remind us just how much we aren’t.
Life has a way of leveling all of us to the same playing field.
Whether it’s a season of grief as you navigate the loss of a loved one or relationship, or a challenging medical or financial situation, it’s at these major life-changing moments many people turn to God for help.
In reality, we should always be turning to God and surrendering to Him, asking not for our will – but His will – be done.
Even when we don’t understand, or don’t like it – we must remember God knows best, and His ways are not our ways.
Eternal Hope
“For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him. He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.” Psalm 62: 5-7
On David’s darkest day, when he didn’t know how he would survive, he still knew God was sovereign, and that ultimately, God was his only hope.
So often we trust in man – whether it’s politicians, pastors, friends, family, or even a spouse – to “rescue” or save us.
And while God does put people into our lives to help carry the heavy burdens of life – the only one who will never fail or let us down is God.
By following David’s example in taking rest in God, our Rock, we too won’t feel shaken by the storms of life.
If you’ve never read through the Psalms – consider reading one or two a day and then meditating on them.
This beautiful book of the Bible has helped many Christians navigate some of their darkest seasons by remembering the promises of God.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
