Making a decision to abandon one’s former religion and follow Christ can be deadly in certain areas of the world.
As for Pastor Bumbariya and his family, he learned this all too well when his own family members attacked his home.
In fact, his relatives came armed with guns, axes, swords, and a host of other weapons – and you won’t believe what they did to his family.
Pastor Bumbariya is a Christian who lives in India.
He loves the Lord, and refused to deny Jesus Christ as Lord – even if it put his own life at risk.
His father and brother are also Christians, and together they all left behind their formal tribal religion to follow Jesus.
This alone is a testament to the power of God’s Word to change hearts and reveal the supernatural life-saving truth of the Gospel.
But some of the Pastor’s relatives could not get over the “betrayal” of certain family members’ decision to leave their former ways and become Christians.
You see, leaving behind one’s tribal religion carries a death sentence in some areas of India.
So instead of simply respecting the freedom and choice of religion, these family members went after their own relatives with the intention to kill them all.
When they arrived, they first got ahold of Pastor Bumbariya’s father and began to attack him with an axe and then a sword – chopping away at his flesh and ultimately taking his life.
But they didn’t stop there.
The angry relatives then went after Pastor Bumbariya himself.
They swung at him with both a sword and axe, hacking away at his body even after the Pastor had fallen to the ground unconscious.
Eventually, they assumed he was finally dead and fled the scene.
Little did they know, their tools didn’t do the job as they had hoped.
By the grace of God, this pastor survived the attack and lived to tell about it!
Morning Star News reported:
“After they struck me thrice on my head with an axe and a sword on my neck, I fell on the ground unconscious, but they continued to strike me with the sword on my hand and my back,” Pastor Bumbariya said. “They stopped hitting me only when their swords began to bend. They left thinking I was dead.”
Being attacked is horrific as it is…
… but knowing such hatred is coming from one’s own family had to be emotionally devastating.
Still, God warns us in His Word we must be willing to put Him first above everything else – even our own family.
Praise God Pastor Bumbariya is safe – even though he’s dealing with physical and likely emotional wounds.
We must continue to pray for our Christian brothers and sisters in India!
So many of them continue to face persecution by those who hate Christ.
May they hold strong to their faith and continue to lead others to Jesus by their witness of the Gospel.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
