Whether you are a new believer or a mature Christian, we can always develop an even closer relationship with God.
The good news is, you don’t have to be the smartest person in the room or pay a bunch of money for the latest “spiritual program.”
Right where you are, as you are, and by His grace, God has gifted you the ability to come into His presence and learn about Him. And if you practice these simple daily disciplines – your life will never be the same.
Here are few practical ways you can grow closer to God this New Year.
Spend Time With Him
Think about your closest friends or spouse – you’d say you know them pretty well, right?
You can attest to their character, you know their likes and dislikes, you know their story.
But how did you get to know these important people so well?
Chances are, you’ve spent a lot of time with them!
After all, you can’t really get to know someone without spending quality time with them, right?
The same goes for our Father in heaven.
When we read His word, He speaks to us through His word.
And by spending time reading the Bible and asking Him to reveal Himself to you through the Holy Scripture, you’ll begin to learn and understand the character of God.
Praise His Attributes
In your quiet time, take a moment and write down all the attributes of God – and praise Him for them!
Not sure where to start?
Start with the basics.
God is Holy. He is just. He is merciful. He is love. He is truth. He is omnipresent and all knowing.
For a deeper study, take one of these attributes and meditate on it deeply.
Look up references in the Bible about all the times God has shown mercy on His people – even when they’ve turned away.
Chances are, you’ll be able to see resemblances in your own life on ways God’s character has been revealed to you.
Start A Prayer Journal
Prayer is essential to the life of any believer – and it is a powerful weapon to break through any strongholds and lies you might believe.
So many times, God does answer our prayers, but we “forget” all the ways He has been faithful – which is why a prayer journal is so crucial!
By crying out to God and writing down your prayers, you are admitting your weakness and dependence on Him for help and guidance.
And while God doesn’t always answer prayers in the ways we think He should, we must remember His ways are not our ways.
You can even start an “answered prayers” section in your journal and write down all the times your prayers have been answered.
As a bonus, start a list of praying for non-believers in your life – and actually pray for them!
No matter how far away God seems, remember – God is always with us.
And if you take the time to invest in getting to know Him more, you will truly be filled with a peace that surpasses all understanding.
“For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.” — Romans 15:4
