Joshua Broome was so entrenched in the pornography industry that he relied on drugs to numb his emotions and get him through each scene.
Known only by his stage name and having cut off all contact with friends and family, he was overcome with such despair and loss of identity that he wanted to die.
But then one day at the bank, a bank teller called him by his true name and asked how he could help him – and Joshua responded in a way that changed the entire trajectory of his life.
It’s such a simple gesture to call a customer by their name.
But since Joshua hadn’t heard his birthname in so long, the mere sound of another human being calling him by his real name caused him to break down.
It was at that moment Joshua knew he needed to flee the pornography industry and leave it all behind.
While the pornography industry creates the illusion of glamour and success – many caught up in it are often trafficked or end up emotional slaves.
Since it robs them of their dignity, many feel trapped and unable to leave, overcome with such shame.
Such was the case with Joshua.
The Christian Post reported:
“The last scene that I did, I’m laying in bed,” Broome recently told the “Let’s Talk Purity” podcast. “And I’m thinking, ‘I want to die. I don’t have the guts to kill myself, but like how would I do it … I just don’t want to live anymore. There’s no future, there’s no one who’s going to marry me, there’s no employer who’s going to hire me … I’m absolutely useless.’”
But then God stepped in – just as He always does.
He used the simple act of someone calling Joshua by his real name to snap him back into reality.
After leaving the industry, Joshua met a Christian woman and began going to church.
He accepted Christ as His personal Savior, and after dating for a number of years, he ended up marrying the Christian girl, having a family, and even became a pastor!
Because of his past experience, Joshua can now minister to other people who are hurting, reminding them that no one is too far gone to receive the transformational love of Jesus Christ.
Those caught up in sin often feel too much shame to come to God and think they need to “clean up” their lives first.
But God wants to meet us right where we are.
And He reminds us, in His goodness, that when He sent His son to die on the cross for us, Jesus paid the price for all of our sins – past, present, and future.
Because He died for us, we can live in Him.
What an incredible story of our Heavenly Father saving another soul from the entrapments of pornography.
Praise God for His endless grace.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
