High School football coach Joe Kennedy captured the world’s attention when he was fired from his job simply for praying on the football field after games.
He refused to stop praying and his case made it all the way to the Supreme Court who agreed Kennedy had the right to pray.
And finally, after a long public battle – not only has Kennedy won the larger battle in fighting for prayer – but he’s regained his job AND received a $2 million settlement – and just wait until you hear the details.
Joe Kennedy faced religious discrimination for his public display of faith.
He prayed after the games – and although some students decided to join him on their own accord – Kennedy never forced anyone to pray with him.
Yet still – he was fired – and had to undergo a long and expensive court battle fighting for his right to pray.
When his case eventually made it to the Supreme Court, in a 6-3 ruling the Supreme Court actually sided with Joe’s right to pray which was a major victory for Christians everywhere.
But despite this massive win – Coach Kennedy still missed seeing his kids and pouring into their lives – but in an amazing turn of events he has finally been reinstated to his job.
In addition – he’s accepted an almost $2 million settlement from the school to pay his attorney’s fees.
Faithwire reported:
“I hardly believe it’s actually happening,” Kennedy told CBN’s Faithwire. “It’s been so long that I’ve been fighting so hard to get back there now. It’s really going to happen, and, man, I’m just so thankful.”
Kennedy admitted he has some “nervousness” over his return to the field, especially considering the very public and legally transformative nature of his religious freedom case.
But he believes he appropriately followed through on his pledge to pray after games and his quest to fight for his First Amendment rights.
“I set out to just pray by myself and that’s what my covenant with God was at the very beginning … just give a prayer or thanks,” Kennedy said.”
Praise the Lord for this major victory!
Coach Kennedy could have stopped praying over fear of losing his job.
Or he could have simply moved on with his life after getting fired – but instead he stood up for the religious freedom of Christians everywhere to defend the right to pray.
In our ever-increasing hostile society, Christians will continue to be discriminated against.
Whether for wearing a cross necklace, refusing to bow down to the LGBT agenda, or simply praying – we can expect to have our beliefs challenged – and to suffer for Christ.
What an amazing witness and inspiration Coach Joe Kennedy is not just to other Christians – but to a watching world of unbelievers.
It’s likely many who don’t know Christ are curious what would cause a coach to lose his job and fight all the way to the Supreme Court for the right to pray.
Of course – as Christians we know Jesus is worth it all – and let’s pray this story will lead others to question their own beliefs and bring them to trust in Jesus.
And as believers, we must continue to do our part to pray without ceasing, trust God rather than man, and leave the results up to Jesus.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
