When doctors discover a woman is carrying a baby with special needs, they often encourage abortion.
From instilling fear by telling the concerned mother that her “baby won’t make it” to warning her of the hard life she’ll have, many moms end up caving to the pressure and choose to abort their precious child.
But one mom ignored the advice of doctors to abort her baby – and wait until you see where her son is today.
Stephanie Wolfe already had three children, but she was desperate to add another child to her precious family.
She admits she had a feeling her next baby would have special needs – and it turned out she was right.
During her 20-week ultrasound, two black spots were discovered in her baby’s stomach, often an indication of Down syndrome.
Her doctor ordered her back for a more thorough ultrasound where the tech suspected her baby had Trisomy 13.
But instead of simply telling her the results, the ultrasound tech actually offered to kill Stephanie’s baby right then and there.
Love What Matters reported:
“As I lay on the table with my son’s image on the screen, kicking and moving and heart beating, the tech says ‘The baby most likely has Trisomy 13 and will be stillborn and if he did survive birth he would need to have open heart surgery right away. We can go upstairs and take care of this right now.’ I couldn’t believe she was treating my son like a mole who could simply be removed and thrown in the trash.”
How anyone could look at a screen and see a beating heart and moving baby and suggest abortion is unthinkable.
Sadly, in America and all around the world children with special needs are seen as “less than” and viewed not worthy of life.
But the truth is God is our Creator and He is the one Who brings life into this world.
As Psalm 139:13-16 beautifully declares:
“For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.”
As Christians, we know every baby is a gift from God and deserves life.
Thankfully, Stephanie ignored the words of the ultrasound tech and decided to carry her baby to term.
And yes, Baby Eli was born with Down syndrome and several other medical complications, but after spending nearly two weeks in the NICU – he was able to go home!
And while he’s had some additional medical challenges along the way–including a risky heart surgery–he is now a sweet 5-year-old boy and thriving in his loving home.
Stephanie credits her faith for carrying her through the storm:
Love What Matters continued:
“I had no choice but to trust God,” she said. “Sometimes the thing you are most scared of can be the very thing that sets you free.”
As Christians, we don’t know what the future holds, but we can confidently rest in the assurance that God is sovereign and good – and bigger than any doctor’s diagnosis.
Stephanie’s bold faith is an inspiration to us all!
