“The homemaker has the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only – and that is to support the ultimate career.” – C.S. Lewis
While the work of a stay-at-home mom (SAHM) never used to be questioned, in today’s ever increasing feminist society – somewhere along the road the SAHM has become criticized – even villainized – for not really “working.”
But the truth is – there’s no greater sacrifice or duty a mother has than raising up the next generation in the Lord – and here’s the reality of SAHM that not many understand.
They Wear Many Hats
From sunrise until sunset – the duties of a SAHM are constant.
They rise early to help get their husband off to work – ensuring he has a lunch for the day and his clothes are ready.
Then, they either get their children ready and off to school – or begin teaching them at home.
Meals need to be cooked. Clothes need to be washed. House projects need to be completed. Diapers need changing. Groceries need to be bought. The shower needs scrubbing.
The SAHM is a doctor – teacher – chef – housecleaner – project manager – doing all the “unglamorous” things behind the scenes that nobody seems to notice – yet still needs to be done.
They Pour Into Their Children
But most important – a SAHM has the ability to pour into her children and teach them about the love of Jesus – all throughout the day!
Not every family can afford a Christian school – and sending children to public school these days is a necessary evil for some families.
While public schools used to focus on simply “teaching” – these days they’ve switched to the indoctrination of students – hoping to get them on the LGBT train.
Many moms simply choose to homeschool – and being a SAHM makes this possible (and much easier).
They Serve Jesus “Behind the Scenes”
Being a SAHM might not be “glamorous” to the world’s standards.
While the career woman may be dressed up in heels with her face put together – the SAHM can look a bit more “worn out” – from having to care for children all day alone.
After the baby spits up for the fourth time all over your shirt… or you’re forced to wash your hair in the sink (yet again) quickly so you can still keep an eye on your little ones – it can seem like nobody knows how hard you really work.
But the truth is – God sees every diaper you change – every mouth you wipe – and everything you do all day.
The work of a SAHM is neverending – but it is a true service to the Lord.
A Note To Working Mothers
Of course, working mothers love their children just as much – and many women either choose to work willingly out of the home – or have no other choice.
Working mothers too play an important role in shaping the lives of their children – and many often work a full 40-hour week…
… and then come home to cook, clean, and care for their children!
But while many working women get applauded at work for their performance – stay-at-home moms often feel nobody sees them… or even worse, are shamed into believing their hard work is not actually “work.”
As C.S. Lewis beautifully said: “Children are not a distraction from more important work. They are the most important work.”
So to all the stay-at-home moms out there – please know your work is valuable – and that God sees it all!
Do you think stay-at-home moms actually “work”?
Why do you think society is so tough on women who choose to stay home?

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
