When the Taliban regained control over Afghanistan – the world shuddered in horror.
Previously liberated women now faced oppression. Christians were slaughtered without mercy.
But yet again – God shows us His power in what the enemy meant for evil – He uses for good – and just wait until you see how the underground church is thriving in Afghanistan.
To start, it’s important to recognize things have not been easy for Christians in Afghanistan.
The Taliban has been ruthless – and any Christian who proclaims the name of Christ and insults Allah will be killed.
One can’t even imagine the terror people face every day under such brutality.
Yet still – the Gospel continues to spread all throughout Afghanistan in an unconventional way through the underground church.
You may not see street preachers on the side of the street sharing the Gospel – but the growing underground church confirms what we knew all along – God is still sovereign and working even under horrific circumstances.
PBC Voice reported:
“Andrew Boyd from Release International disclosed that, “Some Christians are still managing somehow, very carefully, very cautiously, to meet with other Christians on the ground.”
He admitted that information was difficult to confirm, but the reports came from foreign Christian TV channels who were still in contact with their Afghan viewers.
“There’s great risk in all of that, but one of the TV channels is convinced that Christianity is now growing faster from a very low base, admittedly, in Afghanistan,” Boyd added. “We’re getting reports from a number of sources that Christianity is actually spreading both in the country, and outside the country in the Afghan diaspora.”
Praise the Lord!
Many people would have never thought Christianity could grow under such intense persecution, but that’s how God works.
The Bible warns us persecution will come – it’s not a matter of if – but when.
And these brave Christians love the Lord so much they want to tell people about the salvation that can only come through faith in Jesus Christ – even though they know speaking the name of Jesus could cost them their own lives.
Of course – while the underground church is thriving and people are coming to accept Christ – there is still chaos and misery.
Fathers are willfully selling their daughters into sex slavery.
Some starving Afghans are even selling their organs (and their children) just to survive.
As Christians, we must continue to intercede for the people of Afghanistan and pray for them to come to know Jesus.
At the same time let us rejoice that despite Taliban rule – the name of Jesus is being proclaimed – and people are coming to Christ.
The Gospel cannot be stopped – God’s Word has stood the test of time – and continues to do so.
All glory and praise to Him, our Living King!

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
