As Vladimir Putin instructs his troops to continue reigning bombs on Ukraine – fear and uncertainty has spread quickly across the country.
But faithful Christians on the ground are spreading the hope and love of Jesus, causing many people to purchase Bibles and take an interest in Christianity like never before.
And now a desperate plea for ‘more Bibles’ is coming from those in the trenches – and you won’t believe the reason why.
As it turns out – so many people rushed to purchase Bibles in Ukraine that stores have actually run out of Bibles to sell.
Wow!
American Bible Society president and CEO Robert L. Briggs has been working closely with Anatoliy Raychynets, the deputy general secretary of the Ukrainian Bible Society to stay updated on what’s happening in Ukraine.
Briggs penned an op-ed for Christianity Today and discussed the situation on the ground.
Christianity Today reported:
“Briggs shared that Raychynets has been sharing Psalm 31 to those who are feeling despair ahead of the Russian invasion and people are surprised to hear that the words resonate with them. The passage reads, “Praise be to the Lord, for he showed me the wonders of his love when I was in a city under siege.”
Moreover, Raychynets also reported that priests and pastors in the last few weeks leading up to the Russian invasion had been flocking to the Bible Society store in Kyiv to purchase bibles, so much so that stock had run out.”
Absolutely incredible.
While it may be a challenge to stock the shelves – what an amazing thing to hear that people are so hungry for God’s Word during their darkest hours that they’ve cleaned the shelves of Bibles.
God’s Word is alive and active and is applicable just as much today as when it was written.
Now more than ever, the people in Ukraine need to know there is someone out there bigger than themselves – someone sovereign and in control.
And no, it’s not Vladimir Putin.
For the first time ever, many Ukrainians are experiencing the peace and hope of Jesus Christ, even as bombs drop around them and fire rains down.
Let us continue to pray without ceasing for the people of Ukraine – that they will come to know Jesus in a real and personal way, and seek comfort in Him.
And as more Bibles are stocked, we can only hope they’ll keep flying off the shelves as more people dig into God’s Word.
God bless the Christians on the ground for remaining faithful even in the midst of destruction and while chaos rages all around them.
Their faith in Jesus is a witness to those who are watching – and will likely lead countless people to surrender their hearts to Him.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
