It’s one of the most important questions of the abortion debate – when does human life begin?
It seems pro-life advocates are slowly but surely winning the argument that human life begins at conception.
And a recent survey shows that 96% biologists agree.
Steve Jacobs, while working on his Ph.D., was researching for a paper on ways to balance the views of the pro-life and pro-choice.
During his research, he found a shocking statistic he didn’t expect.
Out of the 5,577 biologists he surveyed, 96% claimed that human life begins at the moment of fertilization.
This level of agreement among the biologists is nothing short of astounding and backs up a claim that pro-life advocates have long been making – the scientific evidence overwhelming points to the fact that unborn children are just as human as anyone else.
And it isn’t a far-off argument to say their humanity deserves the same rights and protections as any other person.
Yet still, the majority of the biologists surveyed remained pro-choice in their beliefs!
Out of the those surveyed, 85% identified as pro-choice. They were overwhelmingly Democrat, with 92% identifying as Democrats, 89% identifying as liberal, and 63% identifying as non-religious.
This demonstrates that these biologists were not coming to a conclusion simply to support their own biases. In fact, the conclusion they came to contradicts their own beliefs!
The scientific evidence that life begins at conception is so strong that even those ideologically opposed to the pro-life movement must admit the humanity of the unborn!
One has to wonder how many of the 4% who claimed life did not begin at conception were simply unwilling to admit something that contradicted their own views.
Many of the biologists emailed Jacobs, angered at the idea that the survey could be used to support the pro-life movement. Jacobs reported some of the emails he received as follows:
“This is some stupid right to life thing… YUCK I believe in RIGHT TO CHOICE!!!!!!!”
“The actual purpose of this ‘survey’ became very clear. I will do my best to disseminate this info to make sure that none of my naïve colleagues fall into this trap.”
“The relevant biological issues are obvious and have nothing to do with when life begins. That is a nonsense position created by the antiabortion fanatics. You have accepted the premise of a fanatic group of lunatics. The relevant issues are the health cost carrying an embryo to term can impose on a woman’s body, the cost they impose on having future children, and the cost that raising a child imposes on a woman’s financial status.”
As Jacobs points out himself, he did not ask inflammatory or “gotcha” questions. He simply asked when life begins. So why such a vehement response?
It’s because the pro-abortion lobby knows that the humanity of the unborn is a crushing blow to their arguments.
Consider the biologist above who claimed that the relevant issue to the abortion debate is not about the humanity of the child, but the financial burden it could place on the parent. It’s absolutely evil to suggest that a child should be murdered because she or he is a financial burden.
If life begins at conception, as the science shows, then arguments such as these cannot possibly justify abortion.
As Jacobs points out himself, the Supreme Court made its decision in the infamous Roe v. Wade case partly based on the claim that, at the time, there was no consensus on when life began.
Surveys like this one prove this is no longer the case.
When 96% of biologists, most of whom are ideologically opposed to the pro-life position, concede that life still begins at conception, courts can no longer hide behind claims of ignorance. Unborn children deserve the same rights and protections as all people.
As Christians, we understand that every life, born and unborn, is precious in the eyes of God. Christians have done a great job advocating for the rights and lives of unborn children.
While it is often discouraging to look around and see the evil in the world, surveys like this one should give us hope. As our understanding of science improves, it becomes more and more undeniable that unborn children are human lives, equal in worth to every other human life.
Pro-abortion arguments are becoming more untenable and ludicrous by the day. Christians are, slowly but surely, winning the fight for life.
Fellow Christians, continue praying for the lives of unborn children. Keep advocating and fighting for them.
If you want more ways to get involved in the fight for life, you can always volunteer for pro-life organizations like crisis pregnancy centers or March for Life (marchforlife.org)
