Jesus directly commands us to be the facilitators of God’s healing mercy throughout the earth.
We get to counteract the evils that occur by being obedient to Jesus’ command.
And right now, the Bahamas need us to rise to that call. Here are 3 ways Christians are doing so.
Sunday, September 1st was a day the people of Grand Bahama Island will never forget.
12pm, 3pm, the hours passed slowly for everyone in the path where Dorian was expected to land.
The wind got more and more intense, bouts of rain hook-punched the island with bands of its sweeping arms.
8:08pm on Sunday began the full experience.
The National Hurricane Center gave no relief to what their worst fears dreamed: warnings of 220mph winds and a storm surge (the potential rise of water due to wind, above land level) was stated at 18-23ft.
A category 5 hurricane is the strongest we have terminology for; the qualifier is to be 150+ mph. Dorian’s winds surpassed this by 70mph.
The eyewall of this category 5 hurricane stayed right on the Grand Bahama Island for 40 hours straight. Close to nothing remained that had been touched by its violence.
Most hurricanes of such ferocity move at a minimum of 10-15mph. Dorian was under 1.3 recordable mph for the longest time period in North Atlantic Basin history.
For perspective, this speed is less than half of an average human’s walking pace.
When it finally did move, the trauma experienced by all left alive was nearly worse than the storm itself.
Adrenaline and survival mechanisms got them through, the sense of “this has to end soon” kept them waiting for the winds to leave… But afterward?
The death toll is currently 51 people, but that number is rising continually.
1,300 people are still unaccounted for.
Several organizations are working through fatigue and pain to help these people.
And Christians are taking a cue from Jesus to go help, however they can.
It can be hard to find reputable organizations that will use the biggest bang for your buck when donating to causes like this.
If your church or local organization is gathering items to fly over, that’s one good way to ensure you’re helping at max capacity.
However, God is working through so many people and several organizations to get His Love back over onto these islands.
We may not be able to answer why God allowed this to happen, but we can be an answer to how God’s light will reenter such a tragic situation in our world.
Here are 3 ways Christians are helping and how you can help those suffering after this storm.
1. Operation Blessing
The Christian Broadcast Network (CBN) operates Operation Blessing, a worldwide mission to assist disaster relief.
Currently, “OB teams are doing everything to make sure water supplies are safe. The water team produced chlorine using the stream system, and educated heads of household on how safely use it.”
They are working more on a case by case basis, directing their attention to people and their immediate needs.
“They’re also distributing water along with more than 44,000 pounds of food and other survival supplies for those remaining or returning to the island.”
You can donate toward their efforts here: https://www.ob.org/still-helping-dorian-victims-bahamas/
2. Direct Relief
This organization is in direct contact with the Bahamas needs for medical attention:
“Approximately 75,000 people are estimated to be in need of medical assistance in the Bahamas, and Direct Relief is in direct contact with the Bahamian minister of health, who has requested medicine and medical supply support.”
They are able to accept monetary donations on their website:
3. All Hands and Hearts
After initial assessments and contact with Bahamas’ government, they have set their efforts toward: “debris removal, tarping, tree removal, temporary shelters, muck and gut and mold sanitation. We believe in staying for the long term and plan to help rebuild resilience in affected communities. Our recovery efforts will likely target school repairs and rebuilds.”
Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings is one of many companies working to help by “donation matching.”
They have committed to match all donations to All Hands and Hearts for these efforts, up to $2 million dollars!
Donations for their efforts can be made here: https://www.allhandsandhearts.org/
Whichever you choose to donate to, please also donate your time in prayer for the Bahamas.
Remember to include not only healing and restoration for the land, but especially the Bahamian people as they mourn the loss of loved ones and loved spaces.
Also, lift up the organizations and people spending their time and energy to help the Bahamas in prayer. Pray that God’s strength of mind and body, as well as wisdom, will completely overwhelm them and make them able.
Lord, please help the Bahamas and may every human effort to share Your Love be effective and protected by You. Amen.
