As chaos continues to rage throughout Afghanistan, the world watches in horror as Afghans fight for their lives.
And for us Christians, it’s painful to know our Christian brothers and sisters in Afghanistan are preparing for unthinkable persecution.
So what can we do to help those in Afghanistan? Here are some crucial ways you can specifically pray for the Afghan people and intercede on their behalf.
Pray For Women and Children
Likely to get hit the hardest, many women have taken to social media in tears, posting about the persecution they’re bound to face.
Under the Taliban’s execution of Islamic Law, women are forbidden from receiving an education and are denied basic human rights.
And with the Taliban quickly continuing to gain control of Afghanistan – not only are women scared about the loss of their rights, but they’re fearful for their own lives.
Many female journalists have already said they’ve been visited by the Taliban and had their houses ransacked.
The Guardian reports:
“Nobody is supporting women journalists in Afghanistan. We are scared if the Taliban find us they will definitely kill us,” said one who was in hiding. “One more thing to mention – even if they let us live they will not let us go back to work, which is really a financial challenge for me as a women that lives alone.”
Women stayed at home in fear of being beaten for not covering up, or for going out without a male guardian. In several parts of Afghanistan reports of forced marriage to Taliban fighters have followed militant takeovers in recent weeks.”
Pray for the safety of these women and their children, and that God will protect them from those who seek to do evil.
Pray For Fellow Believers
While there are no physical Christian church buildings in Afghanistan, many Christians meet in secret underground churches to gather together and worship Christ.
But as Christian Life Daily previously reported, the Taliban has already put Christian pastors on notice – that they know where they are and they are coming for them.
Despite knowing persecution is coming and that these Christians could literally lose their life at any moment – they are committed to staying strong in their faith and bracing themselves for what is to come.
We must pray fervently that God will give them a peace that surpasses all understanding.
In addition, let us pray God will give them His supernatural wisdom on how to proceed and what to do, and that even in this tragic situation, they will feel the presence of the Holy Spirit and have the courage to keep their faith.
Pray For World Leaders
As the world watches the Taliban gain control of Afghanistan, many leaders are contemplating what to do next.
Pray these world leaders will have compassion on Afghan refugees and that those who have the power to act will use their power for good.
And while there is debate over the United States and our involvement in Afghanistan – pray that President Biden will do the right thing.
God Is Still Sovereign
It can be easy to lose heart as we watch the events unfold in Afghanistan.
Yes, it is sad, and it is okay to grieve and mourn for the loss of freedom the people in Afghanistan are facing, not to mention the upcoming persecution of Christians.
While we don’t understand why this is happening, we can rest in the truth that God is sovereign over all, and He is in control.
Let us turn our tears for the Afghan people into prayer, interceding on their behalf, and praying for the safety and peace for all involved.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.” – John 3:16-17
